Asking the right questions about their day?

Hello Hoover Rockets,

When your child comes home from school each day, try discussing these statements with your child, instead of asking “Do you have homework?” or “What did you do today?”:
·         “Let’s see what you brought home.” Look at completed work to find out what your youngster is learning and how well he/she is doing. Respond to notes from teachers and sign folders or planners if required.
·         “Show me what you have for homework.” It’s your child’s job to do his/her homework, but you can make sure he/she understands by having him/her explain the assignment to you.
·         “Describe a book you enjoyed today.” This gives you an idea of what your youngster prefers to read.  Then, build a daily reading habit by asking what he/she would like to read at night.
·         “Tell me what you learned that you’d like to know more about.”  Use your child’s interests as jumping-off points for activities to share.

Thank you for the canned goods.

*Thank you to everyone who attended our PTA meeting last Wednesday night.
*We approved the purchase of the Pebble Go Database for Hoover.  This allows students to access text through the computer on a variety of topics (Social Studies, Science, Biographies, Animals,,,).
*LPS will be conducting Community Facility Forums on November 29th at Riley from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and on December 1st at Frost from 7:00-8:30 p.m.  You should have gotten an email from LPS with a flyer and details.  Look for more information in the next Hoover Highlights.
* We are still collecting shoes, boots, roller blades or ice skates.  So far only three schools are in the competition (Garfield, Churchill and Hoover).

Did you know that Livonia Public Schools has moved to trimesters for the elementary schools? That's the reason our Parent Teacher Conferences were earlier this year and why our report cards won't come home until December. We are hopeful that this new model will allow more time on concepts before they are assessed and will allow students and teachers larger blocks of time between marking periods. We are focused on student growth and want to give the time to explore concepts. Great things are happening at Hoover.

Respect Others Act Responsibly

Hello Hoover Rockets,

Getting ready to launch
Last week, Mrs. Poteracki's students were learning science concepts outside with Windsocks.  Our Science Curriculum is very engaging and "hands on". Our Hoover staff spent a half day last Tuesday learning ways to integrate our Reading and Writing Curriculum with our Science and Social Studies. We are excited to be taking the first steps in integrating literacy with other content areas.  Our goal is for students to be reading and/or listening to reading for 90 minutes a day.

R.O.A.R. Assembly

Friday we had an assembly called Respect Others Act Responsibly.  The students learned:
1.  It is rude to exclude!
2. Use your WITS when dealing with a bully.
WITS (Walk away, Ignore, Tell someone, Stand up for yourself)
3.  If it's not yours don't touch it!
Magic Ropes to show we are all different.

*PTA Meeting... Wednesday November 16, 2016 7:00 pm
Please join us for our next meeting.  We will be making several decisions for our Hoover Community.  Please come and share your expertise and your thoughts about PTA can best serve our students!  Please come to not only attend the meeting but meet other Hoover parents and get involved in your child's school.

* We are collecting shoes through November 30th.  We will be counting and bagging the shoes.  Once Kiwanis picks up the shoes and we get the results we will let you know.  The school that collects the most shoes will earn $1000.  Let's go Hoover.  Clean out those closets.  Send in any shoes that you are not wearing.  KIDS, ADULTS, BOOTS We take them all.

We love HOT LUNCH!
Lunch Room Fun
Did you know that we have over 200 students eating lunch at one time at Hoover?  The students enjoy their lunch while talking to classmates.  We remind students to sit safely on the bench with their knees under the table.  We have 2-3 P.A.Ls (Parents at Lunch) volunteers along with 3 noon monitors, Mr. Tony and Mrs. Wilcox.  These dedicated folks assist students so they can eat a healthy lunch.  If your child forgets silverware, napkins or straws we have the supplies ready for them.  Thank you to Mrs. Akahoshi for keeping our volunteers organized, our aprons clean and ready with supplies.
