Attention 4th Grade Parents:  Riley Upper Elementary has invited you to their April 12th PTA meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room.

Did you know why it is important to read aloud to students?  Having a teacher read aloud to students helps increase their reading level, because it models fluent reading for students. By following along and seeing how the adult emphasizes different words, pauses at commas and periods, and pronounces difficult words, students can increase their own reading fluency.

This week we sent home order forms for Dearborn Ham.  Don't wait in line order, your Dearborn Ham through Hoover.  Forms are due on March 30th.  Pick up will be on Thursday, April 13th between 3-5:00 p.m.

Beginning in mid-April, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) will administer for the third year the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). Like last year, the M-STEP will be given online and will measure current student knowledge on Michigan’s standards in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science. The M-STEP will be administered in May for those students in third and fourth grade.  Please try and avoid scheduling appointments during the month of May.
We want your child’s experience to be relaxed, healthy, enjoyable, and stress-free. Your positive outlook and supportive manner going into these assessments will also influence your child’s experience.  Thanks for your support.

7 Ways to Build a Better Reader for Grades 3-5
Try these simple strategies to make reading a lifelong habit for your child.

1. Read aloud with your child. Find a comfortable spot where the two of you can read together every day for about 30 minutes. Take turns reading chapters from a book for pleasure, or read books that are above her reading level but are about things that interest her.
2. Encourage all reading. Comic books and magazines can provide a good reading experience. As long as they are age-appropriate, don't discourage his interest, but keep a stock of high-quality books in your home so he has other options easily available.
3. Keep a dictionary handy. Together, look up words she doesn't know and invest in a dictionary she can use on her own.
4. Use informative books. Encourage reading for information. If he has a science report, help him find books for his research rather than only going to the Web. While the Internet is an easy resource, teach him that books are often more detailed.
5. Discuss the books. Ask your child what an author's main theme is, how characters are alike or different, what she likes or dislikes about the story, and how it compares to other books she's read. Share your own thoughts.
6. Expect plateaus. Following some big leaps in his progress, your child may stay at the same reading level for several months. Keep encouraging him and offer praise.
7. Set a good example. Read for your own pleasure and information every day at home, in a room without television.

What is Standards-Based Grading? Standards-Based Grading communicates how students are performing on a set of clearly defined learning targets called standards. The purpose of SBG is to identify what a student knows, or is able to do, in relation to pre-established learning targets, as opposed to simply averaging grades/scores over the course of a grading period, which can mask what a student has learned, or not learned, in a specific course. Standards Based Grading reports what students know and are able to do within each content area.
