Library Books/Browsing Books/Textbooks

If you have a school library or classroom browsing books or textbooks at home please return at this time.  A blue bin will be available to collect your library books at curbside drop off

Message from Mrs. Jungwirth:

We know it's been awhile, so if you are not sure which books have been checked out by your child, please watch this quick 5 minute video by Mrs. Jungwirth to find out how to access that information!  As I stated in the video, the teachers are finding library books in lockers and desks, so if you're having trouble finding them at home, check back again using the method in the video after June 5th to see if the books were found at school.  Hope you've been enjoying reading!
Mrs. Jungwirth

Medications
If your student still has medication at their school, notify the main office and we will make arrangements to have the medication delivered to your vehicle during curbside pick-up. Mrs. Bice will have the 20/21 medication paperwork ready for you to pick up also.

Chromebooks
At this time Chromebooks will not be collected.  Lessons continue until June 12th.

Placements

As we enter the final days of the school year, thoughts regarding planning for the upcoming school year begin to enter our conversations. I would like to take this opportunity to share with all of you the careful process we will be using to place students into grades 1-4 for the coming school year. First and foremost, please trust that all that we know about your child as a unique individual and as a learner will be taken into consideration. Many hours of discussion, review and consideration on the part of our teachers and myself, go into the creation of classes and teacher placement with those classes. Here are some details regarding this important process:

Class lists are developed by classroom teachers and myself, with input from our support staff members as appropriate (i.e.: EST, RCR, and Special Teachers). Many different factors are taken into consideration, including but not limited to: students ability levels; district benchmark assessments in math, reading and writing; behavior and learning patterns; peer relations; gender; work independence; special learning or behavior needs and supports.

We work diligently to create heterogeneous classes which are balanced and include groups of students who can be combined in such a way that the group dynamics maximize the learning process for all children.

Each year, the possibility of creating a combination class exists. Combination classes (i.e.: 3rd and 4th grade “split”) may be created due to the number of students at each grade level. All children will be challenged and are expected to achieve whether they are in a combination class or a straight grade level class. Over the years, we have had extremely successful results with combination classes, thanks to the great efforts of our staff in working to provide meaningful and highly effective instruction to all children, and the strong support of our parents.

We are in the initial stages of staffing and cannot be certain of assignments until school actually opens in the fall. This includes the designation of how many and which teachers are assigned to our school and to which grade level they will be assigned. Some teachers may change grade levels. Please do not speculate with your child who he/she may have. It would be unfortunate if your child anticipated a certain teacher, especially if that teacher were moved to another grade level or assigned to another school within our district, and he/she were to be disappointed.

If you, as a parent, feel that there is significant or unique information about your child about which we are unaware and which may affect his/her placement, you are always welcome to share this information with your child’s current teacher and with me. We ask that you please do so in an email. This would not include a request for a specific teacher, as requests for teachers will not be granted. I ask that you please do not approach your child’s current teacher with a request for a specific teacher for next year. Thank you for respecting this process.

The June Climate Character Trait is Reflection.
Reflective: relating to or characterized by deep thought; thoughtful.

As we approach the end of our school year, it is important to be reflective in where we were and how far we have come. Be thoughtful in your reflections; look for things you can change, improve upon and areas of growth. Take a moment to breathe, reflect and move on.

Self-Reflection Questions for Learning
Now that it’s over, what are my first thoughts about this overall experience, project, class, etc? Are they mostly positive or negative?
If positive, what comes to mind specifically? Negative?
What were some of the most interesting discoveries I made while working on this project, class, etc? About the problem? About myself? About others?
What were some of my most challenging moments and what made them so?
What were some of my most powerful learning moments and what made them so?
What is the most important thing I learned personally?

Reflective listening is also an important skill to develop. Be like a mirror - reflect back what you think, feel and sense that the speaker is saying and feeling.

Work to clear the mirror so that you can reflect more clearly.

KG Orientation

We are so excited to share with you our very first Virtual Hoover Kindergarten Orientation.  Please watch the video to learn about Hoover Kindergarten and what you can do to prepare your Hoover Rocket for the 20/21 School Year.   We will be passing out Goodie Bags and Folders with some Kindergarten Readiness Activities on Friday, June 5th from 11:00-1:00.  Plan on staying in your car and driving through the bus loop!

If you still have questions after watching the video, you have a couple options:

1.  You can type your questions in this FAQ for Incoming KG Hoover Families (click on the blue) and I will answer the questions as best as I can at this time.  Please review the previous questions in case your answer is already there.

2.  We will be hosting optional Zoom Meetings for those interested on Wednesday June 3, 2020 at 9:00 AM3:30 PM and 6:30 PM.  Some of our staff will be popping in to introduce themselves and I will be available to answer questions.

We are hoping to have an in person KG Orientation on August 27th (depending on the state guidelines).  Mark your calendars and plan on bringing your future KG child to Hoover that day.

Did you know that Hoover has a butterfly garden?  Did you know that your family can come visit the Hoover Outdoor Classroom all summer?  Bring some bird seed and fill the bird feeders.  Check out the rings and look for critters.
We realize that not everyone is familiar with the Eco-Schools program or the pathways that Hoover is working on, so we created an Eco-Action Google Classroom that everyone is welcome to join in order to learn more. You can find all kinds of information about the program, including slideshows describing our work, videos we made, descriptions of each pathway and how we’ve achieved it, and also current activities to engage in such as gardening and virtual field trips/camps with local parks and nature centers. There is a discussion board where students can comment on activities they are engaged in during this time apart from each other. We hope that you check it out & find some fun activities for your family!

The code to join the classroom is hv6nzfp.

Depending on when the Stay at Home is lifted, we will have a Student Belonging Curbside Pick Up.  Hoping for the week of June 8th.  Look for more information to come in the future.

Eco-Action

One of the unique features of Hoover is that we are a Green Flag school in the Eco-Schools USA program, in fact the first school in Michigan to receive this award! Through this program, our Hoover Eco-Action team has pursued 5 main pathways: Healthy Living, Energy, Waste & Consumption, Schoolyard Habitats, and Biodiversity. Our recycling program, gardens, outdoor classroom, exercise and hiking trails all fit into this framework. We have also partnered with General Motors to collaborate on green projects through the Eco-Green program.

Virtual KG Orientation

We will be emailing the KG Orientation Power Point and will be offering a Zoom Meeting on June 3rd for families to ask questions and meet some of the staff.  Look for an email next week with more details.

Do you know how many hours of sleep your Hoover Rocket needs?  It is easy to slip into bad sleep habits while we are home and on a different schedule.

Childhood Sleep Guidelines

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) provides some helpful guidelines regarding just how much sleep children need at different stages in their development. Keep in mind that these numbers reflect total sleep hours in a 24-hour period. So if your son or daughter still naps, you'll need to take that into account when you add up his or her typical sleep hours.
Sleep Hours Table
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports the AASM guidelines and encourages parents to make sure their children develop good sleep habits right from the start.
  • Make sufficient sleep a family priority. Understand the importance of getting enough sleep and how sleep affects the overall health of you and your children. Remember that you are a role model to your child; set a good example. Staying up all night with your teen to edit his or her paper or pulling an all-nighter for work yourself isn't really sending the right message. Making sleep a priority for yourself shows your children that it's part of living a healthy lifestyle—like eating right and exercising regularly.
  • Keep to a regular daily routine. The same waking time, meal times, nap time, and play times will help your child feel secure and comfortable, and help with a smooth bedtime. For young children, it helps to start early with a bedtime routine such as brush, book, bed. Make sure the sleep routines you use can be used anywhere, so you can help your child get to sleep wherever you may be.
  • Be active during the day. Make sure your kids have interesting and varied activities during the day, including physical activity and fresh air. See Energy Out: Daily Physical Activity Recommendations for more information.
  • Monitor screen time. The AAP recommends keeping all screens—TVs, computers, laptops, tablets, and phones out of children's bedrooms, especially at night. To prevent sleep disruption, turn off all screens at least 60 minutes/1 hour before bedtime.  Create a Family Media Use Plan and set boundaries about use before bedtime.
  • Create a sleep-supportive and safe bedroom and home environment. Dim the lights prior to bedtime and control the temperature in the home. Don't fill up your child's bed with toys. Keep your child's bed a place to sleep, rather than a place to play. One or two things—a favorite doll or bear, a security blanket—are okay and can help ease separation anxietySee Suitable Sleeping Sites for more information specifically for babies under 12 months of age.
HELLO HOOVER ROCKETS,
We are up to day 71 with only 22 days until the last day of school! We got this!

Staying Motivated While “Sheltering In Place”

Staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic you might have low energy and feel less than productive. You might be grieving the loss of your normal routine and experiencing a lack of direction and motivation. This can make it challenging to maintain healthy habits or adhere to a daily schedule. You might be working remotely, helping your children with schoolwork, or creating a long to-do list of household projects – yet you might find it particularly difficult to stay productive and proactive.

As you struggle to accomplish tasks and address responsibilities, you might be frustrated that you are not doing things as efficiently or effectively as you think you “should.” It is normal to experience ebbs and flows in energy and productivity during such an unpredictable time.

Here are some suggestions to increase your motivation during this pandemic:

1. Stick to a routine. Establishing a routine during this time is one of the most important things you can do to stay motivated. Too much ‘downtime’ can be detrimental when times are uncertain, and sticking to a routine will help you maintain a sense of control. Wake up and go to sleep at consistent times, eat healthy meals, manage your work hours, and find time to relax.

2. Avoid electronics when first you wake up. You might normally check your phone, review email, or look at social media first thing in the morning. Instead, take a few moments to meditate or engage in physical activity upon waking. Focusing on your physical and mental health when you wake up positively impacts your mindset and enhances well-being.

3. Get dressed. It might be tempting to stay in pajamas all day but getting dressed allows you to create structure and stick to your schedule.

4. Take breaks. Make time for breaks. Throughout the day you will inevitably get bored or distracted, and it is a good idea to take breaks every 90 minutes to two hours if you are working from home. If you need to remind yourself to take breaks, set a timer.

5. Dedicated workspace. If you do not have a separate office space in your home, let your family members know when you are working on your computer or sitting at your desk and that you should not be disturbed. Even if you are not working from home, you will still need to set aside time to pay expenses, plan meals, and other household tasks. You might want to wear headphones to send a clear message that you do not want to be disturbed. Avoid lounging around on the couch or lying in bed with your laptop. The goal is to create a routine, and part of maintaining your motivation is to have a dedicated place and time for work. This also helps you mentally separate yourself from work at the end of the day.

6. Take turns. Keeping the kids entertained and following a routine can be like a second job. Balance is important. If you have a partner or other adult in your home, share household, child-, and pet-related responsibilities. While one adult works, the other does childcare, walks the dog, or mops the kitchen, for example.

7. Plan your day. Take just 5-10 minutes each morning (or the night before) to plan your day, and you will get significantly more out of each day.

5.8.20

Hello Hoover Rockets,

Not Returning to Hoover next year
We would like to be aware of any students who may be moving and will not be returning to Hoover next fall. This enables us to organize our staffing and class lists in preparation for the 2020-2021 school year. If your child is planning on attending a different school in the fall, please email our secretary Mrs. Stempeck (estempec@livoniapublicschools.org) your childÅ› name, teacher and their future school or district.  Thank you for your help!
Attention 4th Grade Parents-Message from Riley Administrators
Parents wishing to make a request for a style of teaching/classroom environment for their child for the upcoming school year must make the request in writing to the principal by submitting the Riley 5th Grade Classroom Input Form.  See below.  It is not possible to honor all requests.

On-line Learning Resources
If you need any help with our new On-line Learning we are here for you.  Here are some tips and resources again for you.

Video Tutorial: Logging into LPS accounts (3 min)
Video Tutorial: Overview of Google Classroom (5 min)

*If you are having problems with a username/password, please contact your child's teacher to ensure that you have the correct information and then if still not working,  call the district at (734) 744-2560. Please leave your student's name, teacher's name and primary contact number or email.  If you call M-F between 7:30 - 4:30, they will typically get back to you the same day

*If you are having problems using a district Chromebook and the tips provided haven't worked, please contact the IT department at (734) 744-2560 or sds@livoniapublicschools.org and leave the same information mentioned above.

*For issues with programs "freezing" such as during a Zoom or Google Meet virtual class, try the following:

  • Reboot your home modem and wifi router.  (unplug them from power, wait 10 seconds and plug back in)
  • Reboot any computers connected to the home network (Actually shut them off and then back on, not just sleep)
  • Don't have any more tabs open in your browser than needed and close all other programs if you are on a computer.
  • Make sure no one else in the house is streaming movies, music or video games while you are on your meet.
  • Test your home bandwidth by going to www.speedtest.net  We suggest a minimum of 40Mbps for video conferencing and working from home.  100Mbps or higher would give the best results.
  • Make sure you are not in a wi-fi "dead-zone" in your house; try some different locations for the best signal.
In addition to being our library media specialist, Mrs. Jungwirth also works with the technology in the building and is happy to help out.  You can send her an email anytime  jjungwir2@livoniapublicschools.org and she will respond within 24 hours or you can meet with her by Zoom during the hours of 4:00 - 5:00 on Wednesdays to troubleshoot.  You can join the Wednesday troubleshooting meeting by clicking the link or entering the ID and Password in Zoom.

Martian Marathon
The new tentative date for the Martian Marathon is Saturday, July 25th with a new start time of 10:00 am.

It is possible we could meet as a team prior to the start.   I'll need to make that decision when we are closer to the event date.

The t-shirt pick up will most likely be on your own that same day. (instead of the usual in-school distribution)

If not attending, go to martianmarathon.com by June 1st. to change your registration:
1. Participate virtually on your own time.  The race organizers will send you more information.  (t-shirt and medal will be mailed to your home)
2. Have your registration delayed for the April 17, 2021 event

I wish all of our families a safe and healthy week.

Mr O

Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to help your family through the outbreak.  To read the rest of the article click HERE.

Address children's fears

Children rely on their parents for safety, both physical and emotional. Reassure your children that you are there for them and that your family will get through this together.
  • Answer questions about the pandemic simply & honestly. Talk with children about any frightening news they hear. It is OK to say people are getting sick, but say following rules like hand washing and staying home will help your family stay healthy.
  • Recognize your child's feelings. Calmly say, for example, “I can see that you are upset because you can't have your friends over." Guiding questions can help older children and teens work through issues. (“I know it is disappointing not to be able to hang with your friends right now. How do you think you can stay in touch with them?")
  • Keep in touch with loved ones. Children may also worry about a grandparent who is living alone or a relative or friend with an increased risk of getting COVID-19. Video chats can help ease their anxiety.
  • Model how to manage feelings. Talk through how you are managing your own feelings. (“I am worried about Grandma since I can't go visit her. The best I can do is to check in with her more often by phone. I will put a reminder on my phone to call her in the morning and the afternoon until this outbreak ends.")
  • Tell your child before you leave the house for work or essential errands. In a calm and reassuring voice, tell them where you are going, how long you will be gone, when you will return, and that you are taking steps to stay safe.
  • Look forward. Tell them that scientists are working hard to figure out how to help people who get ill, and that things will get better.
  • Offer extra hugs and say “I love you" more often.
STAFF APPRECIATION NEXT WEEK / MAY 11-15
Hello Hoover Rockets!  It’s time to show your appreciation for our amazing staff at Hoover Elementary.  The 2019/2020 school year has turned out to be a new experience for us all.  In spite of the challenges, our Hoover staff has been working together to make sure families have the resources they need to make learning at home possible. If you want to express your gratitude and do something special for a staff member, here are some creative ideas to consider.

* Email a cute video or picture with a sign
* Online greeting cards
* Online gift cards
* Create a sign for your student to share at the end of an online class, or if the teacher calls on them individually
* Have students wear their teacher’s favorite color during an online class one day (the kids will have to ask what it is ahead of time)
* Have your student type a hand written message or picture for a special staff member then scan and email

**We kindly ask that any gesture of appreciation remain online due to the current situation**
