6.5.20

Hello Hoover Rockets,
Thank you Karen for the sidewalk art!
As we close the year, I want to share with you my tremendous gratitude for entrusting your children to us. Our Hoover Rockets are amazing young boys and girls. I enjoy them so much! Additionally, I am awed by the efforts of our staff each day and am thankful for their commitment to the children and to one another. It is my privilege to serve as the principal of Hoover Elementary. I wish each of our boys and girls, as well as their families, a summer filled with SUNSHINE and memory making events. Whether you are enjoying rides on your bikes, trips to the Dairy Barn or travels across America, I hope your days are happy ones!
We are looking forward to a great 2020/21 school year. At this time, we do not know what it will look like, but we are confident that our Hoover Staff will be ready to provide engaging instruction whether that is in person, on-line or some combination. During these last couple months we have appreciated all of your patience, grit and positive attitude as we have learned how to switch to on line learning. Our staff has collaborated with their grade level teammates and with you to keep our Hoover Rockets engaged in literacy and math! Keep reading and practicing those math facts this summer.

There is so much to be determined for the fall of 2020. Please keep informed by
visiting the LPS website on a regular basis. The district is currently working on
a 'back to school' plan, and will be sharing progress as the summer unfolds.
In the meantime, we have one week left of virtual learning, and look forward to seeing everyone at the Belongings Pick Up Days!

4th Grade Drive By Clap Out

On Thursday, June 11th our 4th grade families are encouraged to drive through the Parent Parking Lot (North Lot) between 4:30-5:00 for our Drive By Clap Out.  Our amazing Hoover staff will be outside clapping, cheering and celebrating our 4th Grade Hoover Rockets. Decorate your car with posters, ballons and messages.  Join us as we wish them luck at Riley.  Vehicles will enter the parking lot from the North Side and will pull forward towards the buiding to the South side of the lot (opposite route of the Drop Off Lane).  The staff will be lined up on the sidewalk in front of the fence.  Please be patient as we acknowledge and celebrate our 4th graders.  We have a parent volunteer who will video the Drive By Clap Out and we will share the link.

We will not be mailing the report card this year. The teachers have prepared a narrative paragraph that will be available starting June 17th on Parent Connect.

Guides to talking about the Coronavirus with children
The University of Michigan School of Public Health has created some free resources for you and your children to learn about and discuss the coronavirus and how we are living with this new germ and new disease.
The video uses an age-appropriate look and feel, and the message is delivered in the voice of a child, which we hope makes it more approachable for your child. The Family Guide will help prepare you for a discussion with your children, including some basic discussion tips, some of the ways we think this video and the discussion will help them, and some other questions your children might ask.

The Family Guide is available for download also in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. And the video can be viewed with subtitles in those five languages as well. To switch subtitle language, click on the settings (gear icon) and select the language of your choice.

Fall Registration
All new students (kindergartners or anyone who will be new to Hoover) need to register online, the sooner the better!
The LPS website has the link to get you started:
Please spread the word to family, friends, and neighbors.

Did you know that our Hoover teachers spend 2-3 hours preparing and creating each 10 minute video lesson?  They write a script, follow a lesson plan, create the visuals whether slides, manipulatives or examples and prepare the materials.  Then they set up the camera or Chromebook and often need the assistance of a a family member to do the recording.  After many, many takes they get a version that they are happy with and the downloading process begins.  Once the video is downloaded they can edit it and make some corrections and then create the link, share and post the lessons.  All of our Hoover staff quickly learned this process from home with the support of Mrs. Jungwirth and each other!  Who knew that we would become film producers and video editors.

Congratulations to our new PTA Board who were elected Tuesday night.  They are already make plans for next year.
