10.11.19

Hello Hoover Rockets,

We are looking forward to sharing your child’s progress next week. Parent teacher conferences will be taking place October 16-18th.
If you are unable to make your scheduled conference day and time, please contact Mrs. Holmes in the office for assistance. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Conferences!

The following guidelines were developed to help parents have successful conferences. I hope a few of these hints will be helpful to you:

*Decide in advance the questions you want to ask the teacher. It's a good idea to jot them down. Pinpoint specific situations and avoid generalities.

*Ask your child if there is anything she/he would like you to discuss with the teacher.

*Be ready to tell the teacher what she needs to know. Teachers are not prying when they ask about your child's health, hobbies, homework habits, or feelings about school. Knowing these things will be helpful in her teaching approach to your child.

* If you're concerned about something you have heard, or something your child has told you about school, keep an open mind until you hear the facts.

* Ask how you can work together with the teacher to meet your child’s needs.

* Take notes during the conference and review them when you get home. Start right away on the action steps you and the teacher agreed upon.

The conference doesn't end here. You have the right to know, at any time, about your child's progress. A telephone call to your child's teacher, will allow you to set up an appointment at a time convenient to both of you. Teachers value the interest and opinions of parents.

We look forward to seeing you at parent-teacher conferences and I hope you will feel free to stop in and visit with me.

Rocket Pad-School Store

It is with great excitement that we are happy to announce that The Hoover School Store, The Rocket Pad opens on Monday.  This year, the students on the Hoover Leadership Team will be working at the store and helping customers with their purchases.  The store sells everything from pencils to glue sticks and look for special surprises during the holiday seasons.  The Rocket Pad will be open on Mondays only this year.  Items range in price from a nickel to three dollars.  Gift cards are also available in fifty cents and $1.00 denominations.

Climate Character Trait for November BE KIND - This month, we will be focusing on acts of kindness. Students could share pencils, provide care when friends are injured, walk peers to the office, open milk containers for younger students or help classmates zip coats.

Canned Food Drive
Hoover Girl Scouts are collecting food for the Livonia Goodfellows.  The Goodfellows have been helping Livonia families since 1936 and are completely run by volunteers.  This drive will support their “No Child without a Christmas” campaign.  All food goes to area families.  Please bring non-perishable can or boxed food.  There will be boxes in the lobby and in each hallway.  They will be collected through November 15th.  Your support is greatly appreciated!

Helping Hearts
Unfortunately, the economy has presented challenges for many of our families. Please know there are agencies in the area that offer holiday assistance. While it may seem early many of these programs are already accepting applications. I do have applications available but if you prefer to contact them directly their information is listed below. Additionally, Hoover Elementary has the Helping Hearts Fund which is used to support our families in a time of need. Any information shared will remain confidential. We care deeply about our families and respecting their privacy. For more information, please contact Jan Bice at 734/744-2730 ext. 20120, Livonia Goodfellows 313-438-0862, Salvation Army 313-563-4457 or Toys for Tots Linda Rankin at 248-777-0510.

Halloween
We will be having Halloween parties at Hoover but not a parade. Students can bring in their costume and change for the party or they could wear “Halloween Spirit clothes” such as orange and black or shirts with the word “boo” written on them. The teachers will be communicating with you what time the Halloween parties will begin.
PS….As you are picking out those awesome costumes, please note that masks, weapons, blood, etc… are not allowed for the party or Hoot N Howl.  Thank you.

Picture Retakes
Picture Retakes will be Thursday, October 24th in the morning.  Please send in your child's picture envelope on October 24th and we will have their picture taken again.

Hello Hoover Rockets,

Coffee with the Principal

Thank you to all the parents that attended our Coffee with the Principal event on Thursday.  We enjoyed learning more about Hoover and how parents can assist in their child's success.

COUNT DAY

Please make sure your Hoover Rocket is at school on Wednesday, October 2nd.  This is Count Day.  The funding we receive from the State of Michigan is determined based on the number of students at Hoover on Wednesday.  Let's get 100% attendance on Wednesday.  You don't want to miss our special guest who is coming for the Walk-a-thon!

Reading Buddies

Mrs. Lipinski and Ms. Charochak's classes are reading buddies this year.  The students enjoy reading and spending time with their buddy.

Hearing Screenings

The Wayne County Health Department will be coming and conducting Hearing Screenins to all students in Kindergarten, First, Second and Fourth Grade.  They will be here at Hoover September 30, October 1, October 4, and October 9-10. If your child fails the screening you will receive a letter in the mail.

Johnny Appleseed

Ms. Charochak's class celebrated Johnny Appleseed by making hats and learning the parts of an apple.

Hoover Handbook Highlights

It is important to read and review the student handbook with your child.  We will summarize a sections of our student handbook each week.  You can access it under the Quick Links sections on our website at https://www.livoniapublicschools.org/Domain/19

Forbidden Articles
Students will not bring forbidden articles to school such as tobacco, matches, lighters, caps, knives, or laser pointers.  Students may never bring explosives, weapons, weapon lookalikes, or toy weapons of any kind to school.  Glass containers are unsafe and should not be brought to school.  Electronic toys and games, and equipment are not allowed.  Students may not carry electronic communication devices such as pagers, handheld computing devices or cellular phones, on school grounds or on the bus, except when approved by the principal.

Be Kind

Every classroom received a visit from Mrs. Bice or Mrs. Linn reminding students the importance of Being Kind and Being Safe.  Hoover is the best school and we want to keep it that way.  We need everyone's help!  Please help support our efforts by talking with your Hoover Rockets about being kind and safe.  That means using kind words and keeping your hands to yourself.  Every day we see students doing acts of kindness and we acknowledge it by giving positive compliments and our positive tickets.  When students receive a ticket half will come home so you can celebrate with them and half goes into our box in the office.  On Mondays we pull 10 winners from the box.  The winners get a gift card to the school store.  We will start pulling winners October 7th.
Did you know that Hoover has many new staff members this year?  This week we would like to introduce one of our Music Teachers Ruth Martin.

My name is Ruth Martin I  am one of the new music teachers at Hoover . I have taught in Livonia Public Schools for 32 years. And yes I could retire but still love teaching.   My teaching career started in Forest Hills Public Schools in Ada, Michigan  followed by teaching internationally  in Tehran, Iran and São Paulo, Brazil. Needless to say I love travel and visiting different cultures.  I teach ,using a style called Education Through Music. It involves  movement, music, social/emotional skills ,cognition and language. I enjoy working with the children to find the musician within them.

Over the years I have had many hobbies ;travel, rock collecting, flute figures, and jigsaw puzzles to name a few.  I have a 19 year old adopted son Jason who loves drawing and marketing.  Becoming a parent was the best and most challenging thing I ever set out for myself. This summer was spent getting ready for the next step in Jason's life , college.

I am looking forward to meeting the families and students at Hoover.
