Asking the right questions about their day?

Hello Hoover Rockets,

When your child comes home from school each day, try discussing these statements with your child, instead of asking “Do you have homework?” or “What did you do today?”:
·         “Let’s see what you brought home.” Look at completed work to find out what your youngster is learning and how well he/she is doing. Respond to notes from teachers and sign folders or planners if required.
·         “Show me what you have for homework.” It’s your child’s job to do his/her homework, but you can make sure he/she understands by having him/her explain the assignment to you.
·         “Describe a book you enjoyed today.” This gives you an idea of what your youngster prefers to read.  Then, build a daily reading habit by asking what he/she would like to read at night.
·         “Tell me what you learned that you’d like to know more about.”  Use your child’s interests as jumping-off points for activities to share.

Fun with Every Day Mathematics

Thank you for the canned goods.

*Thank you to everyone who attended our PTA meeting last Wednesday night.
*We approved the purchase of the Pebble Go Database for Hoover.  This allows students to access text through the computer on a variety of topics (Social Studies, Science, Biographies, Animals,,,).
*LPS will be conducting Community Facility Forums on November 29th at Riley from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and on December 1st at Frost from 7:00-8:30 p.m.  You should have gotten an email from LPS with a flyer and details.  Look for more information in the next Hoover Highlights.
* We are still collecting shoes, boots, roller blades or ice skates.  So far only three schools are in the competition (Garfield, Churchill and Hoover).

Did you know that Livonia Public Schools has moved to trimesters for the elementary schools? That's the reason our Parent Teacher Conferences were earlier this year and why our report cards won't come home until December. We are hopeful that this new model will allow more time on concepts before they are assessed and will allow students and teachers larger blocks of time between marking periods. We are focused on student growth and want to give the time to explore concepts. Great things are happening at Hoover.

Respect Others Act Responsibly

Hello Hoover Rockets,

Getting ready to launch
Last week, Mrs. Poteracki's students were learning science concepts outside with Windsocks.  Our Science Curriculum is very engaging and "hands on". Our Hoover staff spent a half day last Tuesday learning ways to integrate our Reading and Writing Curriculum with our Science and Social Studies. We are excited to be taking the first steps in integrating literacy with other content areas.  Our goal is for students to be reading and/or listening to reading for 90 minutes a day.

Mrs. Poteracki's class using Windsocks

R.O.A.R. Assembly

Friday we had an assembly called Respect Others Act Responsibly.  The students learned:
1.  It is rude to exclude!
2. Use your WITS when dealing with a bully.
WITS (Walk away, Ignore, Tell someone, Stand up for yourself)
3.  If it's not yours don't touch it!
Magic Ropes to show we are all different.

*PTA Meeting... Wednesday November 16, 2016 7:00 pm
Please join us for our next meeting.  We will be making several decisions for our Hoover Community.  Please come and share your expertise and your thoughts about PTA can best serve our students!  Please come to not only attend the meeting but meet other Hoover parents and get involved in your child's school.

* We are collecting shoes through November 30th.  We will be counting and bagging the shoes.  Once Kiwanis picks up the shoes and we get the results we will let you know.  The school that collects the most shoes will earn $1000.  Let's go Hoover.  Clean out those closets.  Send in any shoes that you are not wearing.  KIDS, ADULTS, BOOTS We take them all.

We love HOT LUNCH!
Lunch Room Fun
Did you know that we have over 200 students eating lunch at one time at Hoover?  The students enjoy their lunch while talking to classmates.  We remind students to sit safely on the bench with their knees under the table.  We have 2-3 P.A.Ls (Parents at Lunch) volunteers along with 3 noon monitors, Mr. Tony and Mrs. Wilcox.  These dedicated folks assist students so they can eat a healthy lunch.  If your child forgets silverware, napkins or straws we have the supplies ready for them.  Thank you to Mrs. Akahoshi for keeping our volunteers organized, our aprons clean and ready with supplies.

11.6.16

Hello Hoover Rockets,

I recently heard from a family who moved to another town and school.  They said they really missed Hoover.  I asked, "what do you miss?"  They said "Hoover is such a warm, friendly, welcoming environment".  Parents are invited to participate in events and the staff truly care for each of the students and their families.  This family shared that the new school is "sterile".  We work hard to create a school that is empathetic, respectful, caring and positive.  Thank you for all the support, donations, smiles, and positive energy that you bring to Hoover.  Together we are Wild About Hoover.

Technology in the Classrooms
Hoover students are learning how to use the Chromebooks for a variety of tasks. Mrs. Skibinski's class is working with Mrs. Jungwirth and a class in Taiwan to learn about building an Outdoor Habitat.

Ms. Fortier's class was using the Chromebooks to practice Every Day Mathematics and i-READY instruction this week.

Herbert Hoover
President Hoover portrait.tif

Did you know that our school is named after Herbert Clark Hoover?  He was an American politician who served as the 31st President of the United States from 1929 to 1933. As president from 1929 to 1933, his ambitious programs were overwhelmed by the Great Depression, that seemed to get worse every year despite the increasingly large-scale interventions he made in the economy.

Observing Student Learning
Each week I go into classrooms to observe students learning.  We have an amazing staff here at Hoover.  This week, I saw first graders using the Interactive White Boards in Mrs. Eckerle's class. They were identifying the syllable breaks in words.

Book Fair
The book fair will be open during Conferences. Students will be going in for a sneak peak on Tuesday. If you would like to donate any change for the All For Books program look for a bag to come home with the All For Books Label.

Rocket Pad
The School Store will be closed this week due to Parent Teacher Conferences.
*The MSU/UM Coin War will begin tomorrow and run through this week.  Send in your change to support your favorite team.  Please remind students to be kind with their words and actions during this competition.
*We are still collecting shoes for the Kiwanis Shoe Competition.
*Help support Hoover by visiting Chuck E. Cheese in Novi, on Wednesday.  A percentage of the sales will come back to Hoover.  Enjoy an evening of games and fun since the students have the afternoon off.

Three times a year, the entire Hoover staff takes a day to "dive" into student data to see how they are performing and to be sure that struggling students get the intervention they need. It's very powerful to see teachers, support staff, and other experts all coming together to identify the needs of each child. I'm always amazed at how well our teachers know their students and how it's much more than just looking at data, but about looking at ways to help each and every child. I'm proud to work with such a dedicated group of educators. At Hoover, we look beyond the data and look for ways to make each student successful!

Paws and Roary at Hoover!

Mr. O has two new students.
Fun times with Roary!
Hello Hoover Rockets,

We had a great week last week with our Walk-a-thon.  Thank you for all of your donations and pledges.  Thank you to our parent volunteers, PTA board, the Detroit Tigers (PAWS) and the Detroit Lions (Roary) for making the walk a huge success.  The funds raised from this event are used throughout the year to enrich our children's education with student assemblies, guest scientists, guest authors, guest speakers, busing for field trips, reading month activities, family activity nights, teacher's wish lists, special equipment requests and much more!

Our new projectors were installed last week and they are beginning to hook them up to our computers. This will allow the new white boards to be interactive.  We are so excited to learn how to use our new technology.
Mrs. Christensen's students began using the Interactive Board.

*Join us on Wednesday at 1:00 for our October PTA Meeting.  Our Superintendent Andrea Oquist will be joining us to share information about the Wayne County Regional Educational Enhancement Millage.
*Thursday the students will be participating in a Red Wings Assembly.  They will provide a positive message about the importance of education and a healthy lifestyle.  Students should wear Red Wings Spirit Wear or Red and White clothes.
*We are still collecting shoes for the Kiwanis Shoe Drive.  Students can bring in pairs of shoes and place them in the box in the lobby.
