12.20.18

Hello Hoover Rockets,

Reading with your child is a proven way to promote early literacy.  One of the most important things you can do to prepare your child for his/her future is helping to make sure that your child is reading at grade level by third grade.  You can influence your child's success in school by making reading a daily routine in your home.  Research shows that students who read at least 20 minutes per day score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests.  Do you want to help your child to be successful in school?   They simply need to read.  Keep reading over Winter Break!

Thank You for the Sweet Treats!

Thank you for all the amazing sweet treats for the staff!  It is so nice  to be able to enjoy some home made baked goods over the holidays.  Thank you from our family to yours!

Eco-Action Award at the City Council Meeting

Monday night the Hoover Eco-Action Team got an award from the Livonia City Council and Mayor for helping students, teachers and the community work towards environmental understanding and appreciation.

Last week, our Eco-Action Leaders counted over 900 glue sticks that we are recycling at Hoover.

Hoover Salad Bar

Our Salad Bar has been looking amazing lately.  Thank you to Ms. Wilcox and Ms. Blair for all your hard work to make our healthy food look so appetizing.

CANDY CANE SALE
Thank you to Ms. Charochak, Mrs. Hawker and the Student Council for a great Candy Cane Sale!  The students enjoyed the variety of flavors.

SAVE THE DATE 4th Grade Music Concert

Our 4th Grade Hoover Rockets will be singing with the Stevenson Choir on Wednesday, January 16th at the Stevenson Performing Arts Center at 7:00 p.m.

Did you know that our 4th grade students had an Owl Pellet Presentation last week? The students were informed about the many physical characteristics of owls that help them survive, about which owls are found in Michigan, and heard the recorded calls of many owls. They played a couple owl related games (This is a competitive class!) and then dissected their owl pellets. The students were surprised at the number of bones they found and were challenged to identify the bones and which animal they came from. It was a great morning of learning!

Youth Making a Difference
Youth Making a Difference is a program that encourages and recognizes volunteer efforts by K-12 students. Livonia PTSA Council recognizes the efforts of these students at the annual Youth Making a Difference celebration in April. Some students, among other things, visit senior citizens, help collect money for the Livonia Goodfellows, or rake leaves and pick up trash outside their schools or community. This program and celebration is a great way for our children to learn how important it is to give back to our community. The commitment forms are due back Feb. 22nd. Projects are due 3/22 and the ceremony is 4/25 @ Franklin High School.
Winter Blast
Hoover’s Winter Blast will quickly be approaching after the holiday break. Friday, February 1st from 6 pm-8:30 pm, come and have some indoor fun with your Hoover family at our Winter Blast. Tickets can be purchased in advance to play carnival type games, food, and entries for baskets raffles. Some of the themed baskets to be raffled off are: Disney (complete with park tickets), Michigan State, University of Michigan, Sports, Family Game Night, Movie Night, Lottery Tickets, Money Tree, and Arts & Crafts to name a few.  At the end of the night turn your prize token tickets into our prize room and pick from a variety of fun prizes. Last year full size basketballs were a huge hit from the prize room.
This FUN event will not be able to happen and run efficiently without our AMAZING Hoover community coming together to make this night a success for our Rockets. There will be many opportunities to help from donations, set-up, helping throughout the event, to clean-up. If you have children in 7th grade or higher who need service hours or just want to make a difference in their community, we would love to have them help with running the games. Also volunteers must be 18 or older to work in the kitchen. Please stay tuned for more information as well as a signup genius to come out for volunteers and donations.

Thank you so much to our AMAZING HOOVER COMMUNITY for making the first half of our school year such a success. We are truly grateful and appreciate your continued support. From donating items to our PTA events, volunteering your time during Hoot-n-Howl and Holiday Shop, generously giving money to the Hoover Helping Hearts Fund, signing your students up for Nuts About Science, and being a parent helper in the science class, volunteering at our Welcome Table and in the lunchroom as a PAL, supporting Kids Night Out, the Dearborn Brand Meats fundraiser. These are just a few of the many things YOU do as a community to help make Hoover such a fantastic school for our ROCKETS. We want these precious years at Hoover to be a memorable experience for all. We hope you all have a wonderful and RELAXING holiday break with family and friends. We will see you all in 2019.

iReady Diagnostic Testing
This week is the opening of the second iReady Diagnostic testing window.
All Hoover students grade Kindergarten through fourth grade
will be taking both a reading and math assessment.
These assessments are computer-based, and are adaptive, which
means the complexity of the question depends on how your child
has answered the question before.
For example, if your child answers a problem correctly, the test will adjust the
next question to that level. If your child misses a problem, the
test will adjust to a more appropriate level for your child, and so on.
The iReady Diagnostic is given three times a year for our
first-fourth grade students, and twice a year to our kindergartners.
Our staff uses the results of these assessments to plan for instruction,
making sure each child is getting what they need academically.
Testing sessions are available to our classes both this week and next.
Please make sure your child gets rest and is motivated to their bes
