Did you know that we have 4th grade recess equipment managers?  They push the carts of recess equipment outside and bring them in at the end of recess.  These students also assist in gathering any equipment that might not get returned to the cart so it does not end up "missing" overnight.  Thank you to Mr. "O" and his 4th grade equipment managers for maintaining our recess equipment.

Hello Hoover Rockets,

Report Cards will be coming home today in back pack mail.  We have also included a letter explaining the new Standards Based Grading.  Please make sure you read this letter along with the report card.  If you have a question please open the Hoover Highlights from last week and refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page at the end of the Hoover Highlights.  If you still have a question feel free to email either your child's teacher or myself (jlinn2@livoniapublicschools.org).

Kindness
Our Climate Character Trait this month is KINDNESS.  Kindness means being friendly, generous or considerate.  We teach our Hoover Rockets to use kind words and actions with others.  They could say something to make someone feel better, help a classmate with a task, offer to play with someone at recess, and they could check the Buddy Bench to see if a student is sitting there.  Each morning during announcements we share a small act of kindness that our students could do that day.

Holiday Shop
Our Hoover Rockets had a great time shopping for loved ones in the Hoover Holiday Shop.  They were so excited to show their kindness towards others.  Thank you to the PTA for providing this wonderful holiday experience.\

Did you know that according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), a divison of the U.S. Department of Education, children who read frequently develop stronger reading skills.

  • According to the National Education Association, having kids read a lot is one of the crucial components of becoming a good reader. Young readers need to become practiced at recognizing letters and sounds. The only way to get good at it is to practice.
  • The U.S. Department of Education found that, generally, the more students read for fun on their own time, the higher their reading scores. Between 1984 and 1996, however, the percentage of 12th grade students reporting that they "never" or "hardly ever" read for fun increased from 9 percent to 16 percent.
  • A poll of middle and high school students commissioned by the National Education Association found that 56 percent of young people say they read more than 10 books a year, with middle school students reading the most. Some 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year, compared with only 49 percent of high school students.

Other facts

  • The substantial relationship between parent involvement for the school and reading comprehension levels of fourth-grade classrooms is obvious, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Where parent involvement is low, the classroom mean average (reading score) is 46 points below the national average. Where involvement is high, classrooms score 28 points above the national average - a gap of 74 points. Even after controlling for other attributes of communities, schools, principals, classes, and students, that might confound this relationship, the gap is 44 points.

So what can we learn from all these statistics?  The more students read and the more parents are involved with school the more academic success are Hoover Rockets achieve.  So read those report cards when they come home, talk about areas for growth, encourage reading, check those planners, buy books that your kids are interested in and get involved by volunteering at Hoover.

Standards Based Report Cards
The Trimester ends next week on November 30th.  Teachers will be marking the report cards on Friday, December 1st.  This year teachers will be sharing how our students are progressing on the Michigan Grade Level Standards in Literacy.  You will notice on the report card that there are new and different indicators for Literacy.

NYAS-Not Yet Approaching Standard
*Student is not yet approaching the standard even with support.  At this time, the student is providing    minimal evidence of understanding.

AS-Approaching Standard
*Student is making progress toward the standard and may need some teacher support.  Student is beginning to show evidence of understanding within the standard.

MS-Meeting Standard
*A standard has been taught and the student is able to independently and consistently apply the learning.

You should expect to see a lot of Approaching the Standard this first Trimester.  Students have been taught some of the standards and are practicing the skills but it is still early in the year for most to be doing it independently or to be consistently applying them.

Not every standard is taught every trimester.  For example, in writing a teacher may cover personal narratives this trimester and opinion writing next trimester.  We will continue to communicate with you to help you understand the changes to the report card and to address any questions and concerns that you may have.  Our goal is for parents to understand how their child is progressing with the standards and where are the areas of Growth Opportunities.

Mrs. Fryberger
Mrs. Bice
Mrs. Baughman
Did you know that Hoover has an amazing support staff?  Mrs. Bice, Mrs. Baughman, Mrs. Pickerel, Mrs. Jungwirth, Ms. Thomas, Ms. Mugianis, and Mrs. Fryberger all support students with literacy every day.  You might see students reading in the hallway, in the Library or support classrooms working on interventions and reading strategies.  This year we have implemented an Intervention Block for each grade level.  During this period of time students receive support in reading and are not missing any new instruction.  Great things are happening at Hoover.

Ms. Mugianis
Mrs. Pickerel

11.10.17

Hello Hoover Rockets,
It was another great week of learning at Hoover.  Now that the temperature has dropped please make sure you are sending warm weather gear with your Hoover Rockets.  We will be outside for recess as long as the temperature with the windchill is 15 degrees and above.  Students should have a warm winter coat, warm gloves, and a hat.  It is important that students are able to put on their gear independently.  Perhaps practice this weekend to see if they know how to zip their winter coat and the correct sequence for getting ready.   We notice that children often put on their boots before the snow pants.  If they are able to get ready on their own, they will have more time outside at recess to play.
Winter Dress Sequence
1.  Shoes off
2.  Snow Pants on
3.  Boots on
4.  Coat on and zip
5.  Hat on
6.  Gloves on last

Did you know that this month we are focusing on the Climate Character trait of Mindfulness?  Mindfulness  is being aware in the moment, maintaining a moment- by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment. The students also watched a short video during lunch to learn more about mindfulness and to practice slow breathing which assists in calming. Here are the links to the videos if you wanted to watch them with your child at home. Mindfulness for Children - The Storm
