Hoover Earned the Green Flag Award

This is the message we got this week from the National Wildlife Federation:

CONGRATULATIONS! On behalf of the National Wildlife Federation, I am pleased to recognize your school for an exceptional achievement in receiving the Green Flag Award! Hoover Elementary is the first school in the State of Michigan to receive the Eco-Schools USA Green Flag, and NWF is honored to acknowledge and showcase all of your accomplishments.

To win the Green Flag Award, Hoover Elementary School students and faculty tackled a host of sustainability initiatives including the formation of an Eco-Action team, designing a living classroom, conducting various energy and waste audits and much more. These steps have led to a variety of different outcomes and learning opportunities over the last few years, and all are designed to raise environmental and natural awareness, cut waste, increase student engagement and save money for the school and surrounding area.

National Wildlife Federation was named the stateside host for the international Eco-Schools program in 2008. The original Eco-Schools (http://www.eco-schools.org/) program is an international network of 50,000 K-12 schools in 62 nations, started in 1994 by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) with support by the European Commission. It was named by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) as a model initiative for Education for Sustainable Development in 2003. To learn more about Eco-Schools USA, visit www.eco-schoolsusa.org.

Hello Hoover Rockets,

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Thank you to all the parents/guardians that attended conferences this week.  Together we will achieve our academic goals.  Keep reading with your children and talking about what they have read.  The conversation after reading is just as important as reading.

Lunch in Classrooms due to Halloween Obstacle Course
Mr. O will have his famous Halloween Obstacle Course set up in the Multipurpose Room again this year.  Students will be eating lunch in their classrooms on Monday, October 22nd, Tuesday October 23rd and Wednesday, October 24th.

 Book Fair
The Book Fair was a huge success!  Thank you to everyone who purchased books to support our library and classrooms.

Hoot N'Howl is this Thurday from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  This is one of my favorite nights.  We will have a DJ, games, food and fun activities.  Students are not permitted to bring toy weapons to school for the Halloween parties or for Hoot N' Howl.  Students are also asked not to wear masks with their costumes.  We have young students who might be afraid of the masks.  Thanks for following the school rules.

PLEASE DISCUSS THESE RULES WITH YOUR HOOVER ROCKET IF THEY RIDE THE BUS!

Pack 907 (Cub Scouts at Hoover) are having a can/bottle drive next Saturday, October 27th and any donations are appreciated!  Cans/bottles can be dropped off in to the Pack in the Hoover parking lot.

Mrs. Eckerle brought in a mystery item last week.  Students guessed if it was living or non-living.
Some kids thought it was a rock, an ostrich egg, a snake egg.  They looked it up on line and many were certain it was a snake egg after we did our on-line research.  It was leathery on the outside and soft, which definitely fit the criteria for a snake egg. They cut it open to see what was inside....thank goodness no snake!!  A few students thought it was a mushroom.  They learned it was a puffball mushroom, which is EDIBLE!! They talked about fungi.  It was a great experience!

10.14.18

Hello Hoover Rockets,
Happy Halloween from Hoover!

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES
Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for the afternoon and evening on Wednesday, October 17 and Thursday, October 18 (1:00-4:00 and 5:00-8:00 p.m.). Students will attend school for a half day both of these days. They will be dismissed at 12:10 p.m.

If you are unable to make your scheduled conference day and time, please contact Mrs. Holmes in the office for assistance. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Conferences!

The following guidelines were developed to help parents have successful conferences. I hope a few of these hints will be helpful to you:

*Decide in advance the questions you want to ask the teacher. It's a good idea to jot them down.
*Ask your child if there is anything she/he would like you to discuss with the teacher.
*Be ready to tell the teacher what she needs to know. Teachers are not prying when they ask about your child's health, hobbies, homework habits, or feelings about school. Knowing these things will be helpful in her teaching approach to your child.
*If you're concerned about something you have heard, or something your child has told you about school, keep an open mind until you hear the facts.
*Ask how you can work together with the teacher to meet your child’s needs.
*Take notes during the conference and review them when you get home. Start right away on the action steps you and the teacher agreed upon.
*The conference doesn't end here. You have the right to know, at any time, about your child's progress. A telephone call to your child's teacher, will allow you to set up an appointment at a time convenient to both of you. Teachers value the interest and opinions of parents.

We look forward to seeing you at parent-teacher conferences and I hope you will feel free to stop in and visit with me.

Birthdays
As parents are planning birthday parties, please remember that teachers and or students cannot pass out invitations unless all of the students in the class are invited.  We do not want anyone to feel left out or excluded from an event.

Hoover is a Healthy School.  Students are not permitted to bring in birthday treats such as cupcakes or cookies for the class.  If you would like to celebrate a birthday you can send in items that are not edible or donate an indoor recess game for the classroom.  Thanks for keeping our Hoover Rockets Healthy

Rocket Pad-School Store

It is with great excitement that we are happy to announce that The Hoover School Store, The Rocket Pad, opened this week.  This year, the students on the Hoover Leadership Team will be working at the store and helping customers with their purchases.  The store sells everything from pencils to glue sticks and look for special surprises during the holiday seasons.  Each week, the First and Second Graders can shop on Tuesdays during their lunch recess and the Third and Fourth Graders can shop during their lunch recess on Thursdays.  Items range in price from a nickel to three dollars.  Gift cards and also available in fifty cent and $1.00 denominations.

THIRD GRADE FIELD TRIP
Last week, our third graders had a great field trip to Greenfield Village.  Thank you to the parents that chaperoned and the PTA for funding the transportation.

THIRD GRADE READING BILL

Are you familiar with the third grade-reading bill?  This is sometimes referred to as Public Act 306 or House Bill No. 4822.  At parent-teacher conferences, you will receive a copy of your child's fall assessment results.  The focus of parent-teacher conferences won't be on the report card, which comes home in December, but rather your child's current progress academically and socially.  To address this fall data, every classroom will have a designated period of each day devoted to providing additional supports to struggling learners and enrichment/extension activities for children who are scoring at or above grade level on their assessments.  We will also count on you for a home plan to help your child be successful with their grade level expectations.  This Third Grade Reading link contains manyinformational documents from Wayne County RESAwhich highlights the third grade-reading bill and the importance of early literacy.  Thank you for being an active partner in your child's education.

Hello Hoover Rockets,

Kate with her winning banner entry.

Walk-a-thon

We had a great time walking with Paws at the Hoover Walk-a-thon.  Thank you for all your hard work collecting pledges to support Hoover.  We achieved our goal and we will have the dunk tank on Field Day.  The final numbers are being tabulated and we will announce the winners next week.  It is very tight so if you have any remaining donations please send them in on Monday.

Outdoor Classroom and Garden

Mrs. Eckerle's class used our pumpkins from the school garden for a science\math exploration. They tested them to see if they would sink or float. They measured circumference. The kids also decorated them with a Sharpie.
They talked about why a grape sinks, but a pumpkin and apple float.

Image result for kindness

KINDNESS The October Climate Character Trait is Kindness.  Each day the students here a "tip of the day" during the announcements.  Today's tip is:  Sit by someone new at lunch.

Mrs. Lipinski's class wrote about kindness this week.

Why is it important to be kind you ask?  Well here is why. Kindness helps with many things like:  making friends, having fun and even makes people smile!  Here are some ways to be kind to others; share, give, think of others, help and if people are feeling lonely ask them if they want to play.  That's a way to make a new friends!  See kindness is important!  I hope you are kind too!  Lucas R.

Kindness is super important!  What is kindness?  Kindness is giving to the less fortunate.  Kindness is playing with someone who is not having a good day.  There is no limit to how kind you can be.  When you are kind you will have more friends, feel good about yourself and have a better day.  If you are mean and do not treat others the way you want to be treated you will not have as many friends and not a lot of people will want to play with you because you are an unkind person.  As you can see being kind is great.  So the next time you see someone sad, play with them.  Then you know you are being kind.  Tommie H.

Image result for cub scoutsLivonia Cub Scout Pack 907 will be doing a can and bottle drive on Saturday, October 27th in the north Hoover parking lot from 12:00 pm-4:00 pm.  So save those returnables, drive on over and we will help unload your vehicle.  Come support our active local Cub Scouts!

Image result for being on time

Did you know what a difference a few minutes makes in the morning?
Think about it this way....
If your student is chronically late every morning, or many mornings, as he/she is arriving, the rest of the class is already moving on.  Morning routines include: being organized for the day, morning work, attendance, lunch count, specials, calendar, reviewing daily schedules, etc.!  You would be amazed at how much is happening the very first 10 minutes of class.  When your child is late, they miss out on this very important part of the day.  Please have your child here before the first bell, which is at 8:50, when children are escorted to their lockers.  By the second bell, 8:54, instruction is beginning!  We appreciate your support.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT for our Walk-a-Thon!!!! We met our goal of $10,000. We will have the final numbers with the class and student breakdowns next week.
