5.1.20

Hello Hoover Rockets,
Thank you for all your patience, support, and GRIT during this first week of On-line Learning.  Our Hoover staff is working hard to learn and implement this new way of teaching.  The best reward has been seeing all of the smiling faces, pieces of writing and math problems.  We miss each and every one of you.  Our staff is working hard to maintain connections with students and keep learning alive.  We realize there are some bumps in the road due to Wifi or technology issues and know that we are problem solving those daily.  Thank you for understanding and continuing to stay involved with our Hoover Community.  Please do not hesitate to reach out through email with any questions or concerns.

Helping Hearts
Unfortunately, the current COVID-19 situation has presented economic challenges for many of our families. Hoover Elementary has the Helping Hearts Fund which is used to support our families in a time of need. Any information shared will remain confidential. We care deeply about our families and respecting their privacy. For more information, please contact Jan Bice at jbice2@livoniapublicschools.org.

Parent Support with Emotional Anxiety
Mrs. Bice is happy to support our parents and students with anxiety and emotional needs.  If you would like to reach out to her through email she will set up a Zoom meeting with you or she can talk to you on the phone. jbice2@livoniapublicschools.org.

Tips on reducing stress while helping your child learn at home
Spending time wishing things were otherwise is an exercise in frustration. And since research shows that acceptance is an important trait in positive well-being, here are a few mantras about simplification you might want to try:
  • I am not homeschooling. I am doing my best to help my kids learn at home during a crisis.
  • I am not “working from home.” I am doing my best to work at home during a crisis.
  • I cannot be as productive as normal because these are not normal times. I will focus on what I can accomplish in just the next 24 hours and let go of what I cannot accomplish right now.
These came from a great article below that was shared with us from our Hoover School Psychologist Brittany Stall. Click on the link below to learn ways to reduce stress while helping your child learn at home.

Young Fives Registration Begins May 14th
Please visit the Livonia Public Schools website to register for Young Fives beginning May 14th.

Young Fives is designed for students who are eligible for kindergarten, but require more time to further develop their emotional, social, physical, and/or cognitive skills. Children must be 5 years old between July 1 and September 1. Parents have the option of requesting a waiver for enrollment if their child's birthday falls after the September 1st cut-off date but before December 1st. The program is tuition-free, as it is funded by the state. Children attend five days per week in either the AM or PM session for the traditional school year. Participation in Young Fives is by parental choice.

Stay Connected
If you are looking for a way to stay connected to our amazing Hoover family during this time, we have 3 FaceBook pages to check-out!

*The Hoover Rockets PTA page is a great place to stay informed about events and announcements.   Our new secretary, Mrs. Gregg, is even doing the morning announcements each day from her house through a video.

*The Herbert Hoover Elementary School page is new since January and just getting up and running.  We are also posting the morning announcements here!

*The Hoover Eco-Action Community page contains links to many great outdoor activities and learning opportunities.  We will also be attempting to continue some of the work of the Eco-Action team such as signing up to do at-home projects, fill Hoover's bird feeders, and start some garden clean-up days in the coming weeks.

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK MOVED
Due to all the adjustments with school, we have decided to move Staff Appreciation week to May 11-15. We felt it necessary to give everyone time to settle into a new routine. If you want to plan ahead and start thinking of ways to share your appreciation, here are a few helpful ideas:

* Email a cute video or picture with a sign
* Create a sign to share at the start or end of an online class
* Have all the kids wear their teacher’s favorite color during an online class (the kids will have to ask what it is ahead of time)
* Online greetings card
* Online gift card
* Have your student type a hand written message or picture to express how much they miss Hoover (scan & email to staff)

STAY STRONG!

Hello Hoover Rockets,

As we move into virtual learning next week, you should have received an email from your childÅ› teacher with information about See Saw (KG) and Class Dojo (1st Grade), or Google Classroom (2nd-4th Grade). Teachers will be working together as a grade level to post all lessons and assignments in ELA, Math and Specials. They have been working on District teams as well this week so you might see videos from Hoover teachers or from other teachers in LPS. Our teachers will also be having a weekly meeting with students. It is important for students to participate and be involved in their learning during these last 7 weeks of school. If you have not signed up for their virtual classrooms use this weekend to sign up. We sent an email yesterday with Resources for Online Learning that Mrs. Jungwirth put together if you need some support. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with your questions and concerns. We are here to support you and your Hoover Rocket.

Exterior Wireless Access at Hoover
The map attached to this email shows possible exterior Internet access locations for families that may not have access at home. The locations marked on each map show locations around Hoover that are most likely to allow families to get access to the Internet from their vehicle.

Maintain a Normal Routine to the Extent Possible
*Keep to a regular schedule, as this can be reassuring and promotes physical health.
*Encourage your children to keep up with their schoolwork and extracurricular activities, but do not push them if they seem overwhelmed.
*Work to establish a basic daily routine and schedule for your student (s) that includes a focus on reading, critical thinking, creative activities, and physical fitness.

The PTA would like to send you all a warm and friendly hello. We hope you and your families are all healthy and happy! Do you realize it has been 43 days since our last Hoover school day!? If you are missing the hustle and bustle of school and want to stay connected, join the Hoover Rockets PTA Facebook page. It’s a fun and positive place to post pictures about your adventures at home. We wish you all the best as you share in your children’s education. Here are a few words of wisdom from a childhood favorite of many, Mr. Rogers…

4.17.20

Hello Hoover Rockets,

I hope that each and every one of you is doing well.  I'm sure that last week really didn't feel like "spring break."  But, I hope that you enjoyed the break and Easter, for those that celebrate.  Today, the teachers will be sending enrichment plans for next week.
There has been a great deal going on behind the scenes.  The governor's executive orders have precipitated some changes to how we are providing distance learning.  Therefore, teachers have been in professional development sessions remotely the last several days.  We are rolling out the "new" plan to comply with the executive order beginning the week of April 27th. We will do our best to make it a smooth transition.  As a parent, I recognize you are dealing with a tremendous amount of responsibilities right now.  We know this is a tough balancing act and we are here support you along the way. Look for an email from the District later today with more details about the new plan.

4th Grade Send Off
The PTA board is working with the teachers to plan for alternative ways to send off our students. Hoping to include some sort of a Clap Out and Celebration. Please stay tuned for more details to come!

Eco-Action Tips

Our Hoover Eco-Action Team has created a Calendar with Tips for the Month of April.  Earth Day is this month so letÅ› get outside and make a difference!  Here is the link to the Eco-Action Tip of the Day

Using Chromebooks at home
As a reminder to your children, all district Chromebooks are monitored by software to protect students.  When a student searches or visits a website that is inappropriate in nature, the district will receive a warning with your child's name and exactly what they searched.  As a district, we will be monitoring online habits and will reach out to families if their child has violated these rules. Remind your students to only be on websites and to only search appropriate and educationally related topics.  We have a limited number of Chromebooks so we are restricting it to one per family. If your child needs a chromebook, please email Mrs. Bice at jbice2@livoniapublicschools.org.

When Can We Pick Up Personal Items?
When we are able to safely leave our homes and open the building to the public, we will have a day for families to come to Hoover to pick up medications, return library books and pick up personal items from lockers and desks. Later in June, we are hoping to have a day for families to pick up Yearbooks and 4th grade DVDs. We are hoping these will be done by then. Fingers Crossed!

1st and 4th Grade Parents
If you have paid for a field trip with a check, we will be voiding the checks. If you paid with cash we will be refunding the cash, when we are allowed to open the building to the public. Thanks for understanding.
