2.23.18

Hello Hoover Rockets,

It was a busy week at Hoover.  Students learned from each other, from hands on experiences and from an expert from the State of Michigan.  Here are some of the highlights:

Mrs. Lipinski's Wax Museum
Lucille Ball
Sacajawea
Our 4th grade students selected a person of interest to read and study.  Then they created a visual board and dressed as their famous person.  Wednesday Mrs. Lipinski's class opened their Wax Museum to families, classes and guests.  It is amazing to see their confidence as the students shared their excitement and new knowledge with other Hoover Rockets and guests.

Cyber Safety Assembly

Here are some of the things our students learned at the Cyber Safety assembly

1.  What are the 3 KEEPs of Internet Safety? (Ask your child to show the hand motions for this).
• I Keep Safe my personal information—all of it!
• I Keep Away from internet strangers.
• I Keep Telling my parents or a trusted adult about anything that makes me uncomfortable.
2. Who are trusted adults? Someone you can talk to about anything—who is a good listener and who has helped you before–like parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, doctors, nurses, and police officers.

3. Why do we ask permission from a trusted adult before going online? A trusted adult will make sure that a child will go to safe sites on the internet. A trusted adult will also be able to help if a child encounters something online that makes them uncomfortable.

4. What is personal information? Your full name, address, phone number, picture, and even the name of your school.

3rd Grade Fur Trading Assembly
On Wednesday, our third grade classes learned all about fur trading.  They felt a variety of animal furs and learned how those furs were used to trade for other commodities.

The Heart of Detroit
Hoover made the news Friday night on Channel Four.  If you go to the site below and scroll down you can see the Heart of Detroit story with our very own students, staff and alumni.  It is a great story about a Hoover Rocket alumni, his family and the Outdoor Classroom with Mitch Album.  Thank you to the Anderson Family!

Did you know our second grade team has over 64 years of experience combined?  They have been focusing on teaching students to write facts from a non-fiction text. Our second graders are looking forward to the Battle of the Books Competition in March.

Cass 2017 Battle of the Books
Hello Hoover Rockets,

We are learning lots at Hoover while we watch it snow.  On Thursday Mrs. Linn and Mrs. Mayne kicked off Battle of the Books.  The students learned all about the Battle and flyers came home today.  The event will take place on March 28th in the morning.  We sent out an eblast with information as well.  We are looking for some parent coaches to help our teams.  The coaches would meet once a week with their team on the day that works best for their schedule, during 2nd recess (2:30-3:00).  Coaches would ask students questions to help them prepare and make sure all of the battle books have been assigned to team mates.  Coaches
will have a meeting to learn what to do.  We are very excited to
bring this Cass event to Hoover.  Thank you to Mrs. King and Mrs.
Mayne for leading Battle of the Books.

Masterworks-Impressionism
Thank you to our wonderful PTA for facilitating  the Masterworks Art Program at Hoover.  The focus this month has been on Impressionism.  Mrs. Cannell's class created their own artwork.
Mrs. Hawker's class also created their own masterpieces.

Did you know that our Kindergarten teachers have over 66 years of teaching experience combined?  Some have even taught preschool as well as first, second and third grade.  They know what our students need to be successful in elementary school.  We are so lucky to have an amazing team in Kindergarten.  They provide a nurturing, caring, engaging, structured environment for our Hoover Rockets.
