Hoover Earned the Green Flag Award

This is the message we got this week from the National Wildlife Federation:

CONGRATULATIONS! On behalf of the National Wildlife Federation, I am pleased to recognize your school for an exceptional achievement in receiving the Green Flag Award! Hoover Elementary is the first school in the State of Michigan to receive the Eco-Schools USA Green Flag, and NWF is honored to acknowledge and showcase all of your accomplishments.

To win the Green Flag Award, Hoover Elementary School students and faculty tackled a host of sustainability initiatives including the formation of an Eco-Action team, designing a living classroom, conducting various energy and waste audits and much more. These steps have led to a variety of different outcomes and learning opportunities over the last few years, and all are designed to raise environmental and natural awareness, cut waste, increase student engagement and save money for the school and surrounding area.

National Wildlife Federation was named the stateside host for the international Eco-Schools program in 2008. The original Eco-Schools (http://www.eco-schools.org/) program is an international network of 50,000 K-12 schools in 62 nations, started in 1994 by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) with support by the European Commission. It was named by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) as a model initiative for Education for Sustainable Development in 2003. Did you know that our KG students participated in a High Tech High Touch assembly this week?  They learned about Forces PUSH and PULL.  The students enjoyed the hands on experience!  Thank you PTA!

PTA NEWS
Thank you, Hoover Families, for helping to make Hoot-N-Howl such a successful event! It was so fun to see the halls full of costumes and families having a good time together. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and donated items. We have the most AMAZING school community!!!
NATIONAL PTA REFLECTIONS CONTEST: Calling All Artists: Is your Hoover Rocket a visual artist, photographer, writer, dancer, musician, or film maker? Then keep reading because the PTA has a program for them!! Students make projects that are inspired by a theme. This year’s theme is “Heros Around Me.” They can make a project in as many categories as they want. It is free to enter!! This is the 50th Anniversary of the National PTA’s Reflections Contest and we are excited to offer it at Hoover. LPTSA will judge all the entries from Livonia Public Schools. They will choose four winners in each age range and category. Then they send those winners on to be judged at the state level. Top winners at the state level go on to national judging. The deadline to turn in projects is November 14, 2018. Please contact our Hoover PTA Reflections Chair, Christina Testa, Christina.testa.80@gmail.com, if you would like information.
BAKE SALE: PTA will be hosting a bake sale this year during the election on November 6th. We will be in need of volunteers to man the tent outside and for baked goods (store bought is fine). Please look for an e-blast next week with the sign up genius
Upcoming Community Fundraisers: Mark your calendars for Skate Night at Riverside arena November 8th and Five Below November 23-December 9th. Watch for more details to come home soon. Thank you in advance for your support.
Holiday Parade: The Livonia Holiday Parade will be Sunday, December 2nd starting at 4pm. The staging area will begin around 2:45pm at Frost Middle School. We are looking for another great group of Hoover Families to walk together in the parade. This event is open to all that want to participate. Look for more details to come in future correspondence.

SPIRIT DAY TOTALS: No one shows school spirit like our Hoover Rockets!! So far we have enjoyed Hat Day and College Day. Together we have raised $361 for a worthy cause yet to be determined. Last year we supported an organization near and dear to our Hoover hearts while sending a family to camp. We are really excited to see what we will be able to accomplish this year by using our school spirit money. THANK YOU HOOVER FAMILIES!!!
