US Ecology Volunteers and Hoover Parents
Did you know that our 3rd grade students participated in a trash dissection last Friday?  The students sorted and analyzed our lunchroom trash.  What category was thrown out the most?  (food, liquid, plastic, paper, metal or cardboard)  What can be done to help students eat their food at lunch?  According to a survey by the American Chemistry Council, the average household throws out $640 of food each year.  Furthermore, 76% of Americans admit to throwing out leftovers on a monthly basis.  Since data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics tells us that the average American household spent $4015 on food in 2015, this means we're throwing away almost 16% of the food we buy-and that's not a number to be proud of.  Inspiring Video:  Food Rescue Warriors: https://youtu.be/GY4Bw1Mhqss

This year was the 50th Anniversary of the National Reflections Contest. We are so proud of all 4 of our Hoover Rockets for being brave and entered into this year’s competition. Youth Making a Difference
Has your child completed a community service project over the summer or are they planning to do so over the holiday season? Youth Making a Difference is a program that encourages and recognizes volunteer efforts by K-12 students. Livonia PTSA Council recognizes the efforts of these students at the annual Youth Making a Difference celebration in April. Some students, among other things, visit senior citizens, help collect money for the Livonia Goodfellows, pack lunches for the homeless, or rake leaves and pick up trash outside their schools or community. The YMAD program and celebration is a great way to recognize our children’s efforts. The commitment forms will go home soon and are due back February 22nd. Projects are due March 22nd and the ceremony is in April 2019 at Franklin High School.
