9.13.19

Hello Hoover Rockets,
WOW!  It was a busy, fun week at Hoover.  We celebrated Freedom Run, got our pictures taken and enjoyed a PJ Spirit Day.

Freedom Run
Thank you to Mr. O, our PTA, our 4th grade leaders and the parent volunteers that made Freedom Run a huge success.  The students enjoyed cold popsicles after exercising their heart muscle and learning about our rights as U.S. Citizens.

Curriculum Night/Open House

Please plan on attending our Curriculum Night and Open House on Tuesday, September 17th. This is a very important evening for you to learn about the curriculum, classroom routines and expectations. Last year we had 94% participation. We know we can beat that this year. Mark your calendars! We will have a magician in the Multipurpose Room so parents can attend the Curriculum Night sessions and focus on the critical information.

Exercise Trail
Our Exercise Trail is getting a lot of use all ready.  Students are walking laps, and doing push ups during recess.  Thank you to our own Hoover Alumni Jay Patterson for making this his Eagle Scout Project.  Thank you to Mr. Shawn Grose, Mr. O, our Hoover families that volunteered and the Boy Scout Troop.  They spend hundreds of hours to make this a reality for our Hoover Rockets!

New Mural in the Kindergarten Hallway
Mr. Poteracki was busy in August painting this beautiful wall mural to help us honor Kellen.  Kellen loved monkeys, being a Hoover Rocket and spending time with his SACC friends.  A star has been named in his honor and can be found in the Pegasus Constellation.  Thank you Mr. Poteracki for sharing your amazing creative talents with Hoover.

Student Check-Out
Please remember that a parent must come into the
office to sign-out his/her student for appointments
or early exit. The office will then call down for the
student, and the child leaves the office with his/her
parent. Children cannot be dismissed directly from
the classroom, lunchroom, or the playground to the
parent.
We must have record of the adult picking up the
child and be able to provide visual recognition of
this adult, or check the identification of another
adult who has been sent in the parent’s place.
Please know that some of our staff who are new to
Hoover may not recognize you and may ask for ID
this is for your child’s safety and well being. Thank
you for cooperating with this important procedure.
Going Home
Going home with another Student. Many of our
students enjoy planning play dates with friends
after school. If you have given permission for
your child to go to a friend’s house after school,
a NOTE from the parent of EACH student
involved MUST be sent to school. The written
note documents permission and ensures safety
without confusion. Also, when a bus is involved,
the office is required to have students give the
bus driver a Guest Bus Pass.

Student Drop-Off
What would a start-of-the-year
newsletter be without a few reminders
about the parking lot!! Mr. O’Loughlin,
Mr. Tony, Ms. Mitchell,
Mrs. Bice and Mrs. Jungwirth and I ask
for your cooperation with the following:
*In the north parking lot used for
student drop off and pick up, cars must be
continuously moving through the right drop off
lane, stopping only to drop off your student. If
you are desirous of watching your child walk to
the line-up area, please use one of the many
parking spaces to park your car - even those
waiting only a short time delay the other families
waiting to drop off.
*When dropping off, please move as far
forward as possible so that additional cars are
able to move in behind you. Our boys and girls
do just fine walking those few extra yards, and it
allows traffic to move freely.
*In the area marked “NO PARKING” cars should
NOT be parked, or left sitting, in that lane, as
it disrupts the flow off all other traffic. You are
welcome to use a parking spot if you would like
to assist your child out of the car - please only
use the lane if your child will be independently
exiting the vehicle.
*When walking from the parking lot to the
school, please always use the crosswalk so that
we can ensure your safety and the safety of your
child. Our parking lot supervisors are happy to
stop traffic so that you and your family are able
to cross.
*This year, we have four Kindergarten classes
dismissing in the afternoon. Many of these
parents are parking in the lot and walking their
children back to their car. If you have older
students, perhaps they could cross Levan, with
our wonderful crossing guards and you could
meet them at the swim club parking lot or across
the street.
*For parent pick up at the end of the day, as well
as during drop off in the morning, please DO
NOT use the SOUTH LOT, which is for staff and
busses only. All parents and visitors are asked to
use the NORTH LOT. Thank you.

Did you know that we have many new staff at Hoover this year?  Each week we will feature a staff member in this section of the blog for you to get to know.

My name is Amy West and I am one of the new music teachers here at Hoover! This is my 17th year teaching music, and my 9th year with LPS. After graduating from WMU, I started my career in Lansing, Michigan, then taught music in Ohio & Montana, then moved back home to Michigan! I have loved music my whole life, and decided to be a music teacher when I was in 4th grade! Music is such a nice way to express your creativity and emotion. I love helping children find their singing voice, and teaching them to play instruments. My goal this year is to make the music room a safe, peaceful and fun place where students can feel comfortable being creative as they explore and build their musical skills.

In my spare time I travel as much as possible with my family. I have a husband and a 13 year old son, Calvin. We reside in Farmington. I have a green thumb, and love spending time in my perennial gardens. I spend as music time in nature as I possibly can! I love hiking and camping in our national parks. Over the summer I drove my son out west to see Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Mt. Rushmore, Badlands, and Theodore Roosevelt National Parks. My favorite summer memory was having snowball fight with my son in August, at 10,900 ft!

I am looking forward to meeting my Hoover students and having fantastic year in the music room!
