Mid-Winter Break
We have Mid-Winter Break on Monday, February 17 and Tuesday, February 18.

February Climate Character Trait is Empathy
Parents are children’s first and most enduring teachers, and modelling empathetic behavior is one of the best ways parents can teach their child this valuable skill.

Other simple ways empathy can be developed include:

*Helping your child to name their feelings, as understanding their own feelings is an important first step in understanding the feelings of others.

*Talking to your child about how other people may be feeling, and why. This helps to build their emotional language and think about other people’s perspectives.

*Caring for animals and plants, which helps children understand the role they play in helping another living thing survive, thrive and be happy.

Perhaps one of the simplest ways of all to help children develop a sense of empathy is by reading books together, as children learn to associate feelings and actions with their favorite characters and stories.

Heart Month

Mr. O has a lot of events planned this month for us for Heart Month.  Save the date 2/19 6:30-8:00 is Family Fitness Night.

Lost and Found Table
Our lost and found is overflowing.  We will be displaying some of the Lost and Found items next week.  Please remind your Hoover Rocket to check the Lost and Found for any items that they may be missing.  We have a lot of gloves, water bottles, and sweatshirts.  We will be making a donation to the Clothing Depot soon!

Healthy Hoover

It is the time of year, when cold, flu, and other “bugs” hit our homes and infect our bodies. This leads us to ask the question, “Should I keep my child home from school today?” While being at school can be a very enjoyable experience, it is also a lot of hard work! Children who are feeling miserable are often unable to participate and engage in learning. Here are some tips to consider when determining if a child should stay home:
First the easy ones …
· If your child is running a fever, or has run a fever in the past 24 hours, he/she should remain home. (The CDC states that children are fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medicine prior to returning to school).
· If your child has vomited in the past 24 hours, or is very nauseous he/she should remain home.
· If your child has any type of infectious disease (i.e. pink eye, strep throat, head lice, influenza, etc.) he/she should remain home until under treatment according to Wayne County Health Guidelines.
· It is more difficult to determine whether your child should stay home when he/she has a runny nose, persistent cough, tummy ache, headache, etc.
Some rules of thumb to consider are:
· Will your child be able to manage his/her symptoms during the 7 hour school day? (Remember, the school district policy does not allow our staff to administer, or for children to bring and self-administer, “over the counter” meds, such as cough drops, cold medicine, Tylenol, etc.)
· Will he/she be able to concentrate on schoolwork, complete assignments, participate in class and participate in lunch and recess?
· Are the symptoms likely to infect other children who will be in close proximity?
· Would I want a fellow classmate with the same symptoms to be sitting next to, or across from, my child all day?
Certainly we encourage children to have excellent school attendance and are not expecting that children will be kept home with every sniffle.  We simply ask that you do your best to gauge your child’s symptoms, especially those of the past 24 hours, and allow him/her time to recover when ill. Thank you for helping us to keep a healthy school environment for all who enter.

4th Grade In School Field Trip
On Tuesday our 4th grade students learned about Michigan Fossils during their In School Field Trip.

Hi! My name is Nancy Gregg and I have recently joined the Hoover family as the main secretary.  I have been married to my husband Mike for 18 years and we have a son, Isaac in 7th grade at Holmes Middle School and a son, Asher in 4th grade at Hoover. We love pets, and have 2 corn snakes named Smog and Nagini, 2 hermit crabs named Merry and Pippin and a little vizsla puppy on the way (name to be determined). We are an active family that does karate together and the boys enjoy playing soccer for Livonia Soccer Club. Isaac does cross country and wrestling for Holmes and plans to run track as well. Asher also plays basketball with LJAL and swims on the Newburgh Sharks swim team. We love the outdoors, being involved in our church, and we all love all things Harry Potter!

I hope to be a welcoming and positive influence for the families in our community. I have already come to love Hoover so much and look forward to continuing with all of you!
CONGRATS NANCY GREGG! We are thrilled for Nancy and her new position as the Hoover main office secretary. She has been on the PTA board for the past few years and a very important part of our team! Best of luck on this new adventure!
