5.1.20

Hello Hoover Rockets,
Thank you for all your patience, support, and GRIT during this first week of On-line Learning.  Our Hoover staff is working hard to learn and implement this new way of teaching.  The best reward has been seeing all of the smiling faces, pieces of writing and math problems.  We miss each and every one of you.  Our staff is working hard to maintain connections with students and keep learning alive.  We realize there are some bumps in the road due to Wifi or technology issues and know that we are problem solving those daily.  Thank you for understanding and continuing to stay involved with our Hoover Community.  Please do not hesitate to reach out through email with any questions or concerns.

Helping Hearts
Unfortunately, the current COVID-19 situation has presented economic challenges for many of our families. Hoover Elementary has the Helping Hearts Fund which is used to support our families in a time of need. Any information shared will remain confidential. We care deeply about our families and respecting their privacy. For more information, please contact Jan Bice at jbice2@livoniapublicschools.org.

Parent Support with Emotional Anxiety
Mrs. Bice is happy to support our parents and students with anxiety and emotional needs.  If you would like to reach out to her through email she will set up a Zoom meeting with you or she can talk to you on the phone. jbice2@livoniapublicschools.org.

Tips on reducing stress while helping your child learn at home
Spending time wishing things were otherwise is an exercise in frustration. And since research shows that acceptance is an important trait in positive well-being, here are a few mantras about simplification you might want to try:
  • I am not homeschooling. I am doing my best to help my kids learn at home during a crisis.
  • I am not “working from home.” I am doing my best to work at home during a crisis.
  • I cannot be as productive as normal because these are not normal times. I will focus on what I can accomplish in just the next 24 hours and let go of what I cannot accomplish right now.
These came from a great article below that was shared with us from our Hoover School Psychologist Brittany Stall. Click on the link below to learn ways to reduce stress while helping your child learn at home.

Young Fives Registration Begins May 14th
Please visit the Livonia Public Schools website to register for Young Fives beginning May 14th.

Young Fives is designed for students who are eligible for kindergarten, but require more time to further develop their emotional, social, physical, and/or cognitive skills. Children must be 5 years old between July 1 and September 1. Parents have the option of requesting a waiver for enrollment if their child's birthday falls after the September 1st cut-off date but before December 1st. The program is tuition-free, as it is funded by the state. Children attend five days per week in either the AM or PM session for the traditional school year. Participation in Young Fives is by parental choice.

Stay Connected
If you are looking for a way to stay connected to our amazing Hoover family during this time, we have 3 FaceBook pages to check-out!

*The Hoover Rockets PTA page is a great place to stay informed about events and announcements.   Our new secretary, Mrs. Gregg, is even doing the morning announcements each day from her house through a video.

*The Herbert Hoover Elementary School page is new since January and just getting up and running.  We are also posting the morning announcements here!

*The Hoover Eco-Action Community page contains links to many great outdoor activities and learning opportunities.  We will also be attempting to continue some of the work of the Eco-Action team such as signing up to do at-home projects, fill Hoover's bird feeders, and start some garden clean-up days in the coming weeks.

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK MOVED
Due to all the adjustments with school, we have decided to move Staff Appreciation week to May 11-15. We felt it necessary to give everyone time to settle into a new routine. If you want to plan ahead and start thinking of ways to share your appreciation, here are a few helpful ideas:

* Email a cute video or picture with a sign
* Create a sign to share at the start or end of an online class
* Have all the kids wear their teacher’s favorite color during an online class (the kids will have to ask what it is ahead of time)
* Online greetings card
* Online gift card
* Have your student type a hand written message or picture to express how much they miss Hoover (scan & email to staff)
